C. Huilo C.
C. Huilo C. is a multidisciplinary artist working across immersive installation, experimental cinema, mask-based performance, and symbolic systems. For more than two decades, their practice has examined how perception constructs identity—how image, space, and collective attention operate as active forces shaping experience. Rather than treating film, objects, and environments as separate media, Huilo C. approaches them as interconnected components within larger perceptual and spatial systems.
Beginning with walk-through installations and sculptural environments in the late 1990s, their work evolved into mask-based immersive performances and projection-mapped installations presented internationally at festivals and residencies in the United States, Mexico, Spain, Greece, and beyond. These projects established a methodology grounded in material fabrication, spatial sequencing, and live technical calibration, allowing images to function as architectural and performative elements rather than flat screens.
From 2010 to 2022, Huilo C. founded and operated Teatro Jaguar Luna in Costa Rica, a long-term arts laboratory dedicated to immersive installation, experimental film, and hybrid performance. Over this period, more than twenty permanent structures—including jungle theaters, miniature cinemas, and architectural installations—were built to support sustained research into spatialized storytelling and audience-centered environments. Within this context, the feature-length cine-arte project Keeper of the Masques and multiple immersive works were developed through iterative cycles of installation, filming, and live audience engagement.
Currently based in New Mexico, Huilo C. continues to develop immersive systems that integrate sculptural masks, projected imagery, and audience movement into environments that resist linear narrative in favor of perceptual exploration. The ongoing Jaguar Portals project extends this research into a mask-based immersive installation focused on how attention, identity, and collective presence are continuously negotiated within spatial experience.
